European and Irish Distillers results

It has always been the purpose of The Wizards, now in their sixth year, to recognise the smaller craft distillers which had started making unusual and exciting new whiskies about a decade ago.  For that reason, the cost of entry was kept modest and I made sure that the very best members of my VIP Club were core to the judging. My group members have been tasting whisky with me for some 12 years now and when it comes to Sweden, Australia and
The Netherlands, they know exactly what they’re doing.

Until this year a distillery had to have a minimum of three entries to win the title of distiller of the year. This year,
I changed the scoring so that outstanding smaller craft distillers with two golds could lift the title of distiller of the year but only if their whiskies had the top average score, had won golds in the past, and had the highest scoring whisky in their class.

This is what happened in European and Irish Whiskey this year:

GOLD MEDALS:

The Irishman Ireland

Writers’ Tears Ireland

Spirit of Hven Tycho’s Star Sweden

Spirit of Hven 7 Stars Sweden

Millstone Peated Netherlands

Armorik Dervann France

Millstone 12 Year Old Sherry Netherlands

Millstone American Oak 1996 Netherlands

SILVER MEDALS:

Irishman 12 Year Old Ireland

Armorik Sherry France

Millstone Rye 92 Netherlands

A total of 15 whiskies were given Bronze, and this year more whiskies left without any medal at all.

Irish whiskey of the Year: Writers Tears

European Whisky of the Year Spirit of Hven Tycho’s Star

IRISH DISTILLER OF THE YEAR: Walsh distillery

EUROPEAN DISTILLER OF THE YEAR: Spirit of Hven

Australasian and Asian Distillers results

The number of entrants for Australasia and Asia was down on previous years, probably because the Australian Distillers are too busy trying to meet demand across the world but specially in the Southern Hemisphere, having won truckloads of awards. Another batch of Awards would do them no favours, creating attention and demand they couldn’t possibly meet. Meanwhile Amrut has also been focusing on specific territories and has been quiet of late.

The medals went as follows.

GOLD MEDALS:

NZ Whisky Co The Oamaruvian New Zealand

Paul John Peated 55% India

Paul John Classic 55% India

Paul John Bold India

Heartwood Heart of Darkness Australia

NZ Whisky Co Doublewood New Zealand

NZ Whisky Co South Island 25yo New Zealand

SILVER MEDALS:

Paul John Kanya India

NZ Whisky Co High Wheeler New Zealand

Paul John Brilliance India

Paul John Edited India

Asian Whisky of the Year: Paul John Peated 55%

Australasian Whisky of the Year: Heartwood Heart of Darkness

ASIAN DISTILLER OF THE YEAR: Paul John

AUSTRALASIAN DISTILLER OF THE YEAR: The NZ Whisky Co
